Robert Silverberg
My second favorite science fiction writer is Robert Silverberg. The World Inside, The Masks of Time, and To Open the Sky are three of Silverberg’s best science fiction novels. Indeed, I believe that The World Inside is the best science fiction novel ever written! The World Inside is about terrible overpopulation problems that occur in the future. However, instead of trying to stabilize or even reduce the earth’s population the people who reside in the skyscrapers convince themselves that everything is great! In Silverberg’s novel: The Masks of Time a fellow who claims to be a time-traveler from the future manages to stir up all kinds of trouble just by being himself. And finally in the novel: To Open the Sky, Robert Silverberg creates an interesting story that mixes the topics of space travel and religion. Robert Silverberg has also written excellent non-fiction books as well as numerous science fiction short stories.
Philip K. Dick
My favorite science fiction writer is Philip K. Dick. I have read many of his books and am particularly impressed with: The Game Players of Titan, Clans of the Alphane Moon, Vulcan’s Hammer, and The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch. I believe what makes Philip K. Dick such a great science fiction writer is that he never considered the genre of science fiction to be an inferior form of literature. Several of his short stories and books have become movies and TV programs. Perhaps the most famous movie adaptation of his writings was Blade Runner which was based on his book: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Unfortunately Philip K. Dick died in 1982.
Paolo Bacigalupi
Paolo Bacigalupi is a great author that I discovered several months ago. So far I have read three of his books: Ship Breaker, The Drowned Cities, and The Doubt Factory. Ship Breaker and The Drowned Cities are young adult science fiction novels, while The Doubt Factory is a young adult novel. Ship Breaker is a novel about a horrible future that we have created for ourselves through man-made climate change. The sequel to this book is The Drowned Cities which deals with the horror of child-soldiers. The book that I most recently finished is The Doubt Factory. This book is about the public relations industry, and how they use their influence to leave harmful medicines on the shelves through their dishonesty. For anyone who hasn’t read any books by Paolo Bacigalupi I urge you to do so!
